Michelin awards three stars to Copenhagen restaurant… but it isn't Noma

Michelin has awarded three stars to a restaurant in Denmark for the first time - but it isn't Rene Redzepi's Noma.

Instead, Michelin has awarded three stars to Geranium in Copenhagen in its Nordic Guide, which covers Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Maaemo in Oslo has also joined Geranium as a winner of three stars - the only other Nordic restaurant to have done so.

Redzepi's Noma remains a two-Michelin-starred venue, despite the fact that it is often mistaken for a three-star. It is currently operating as a pop-up in Australia.

Last year it emerged that Noma was set to close and reopen in 2017 with "a new menu and a new mission".

The existing Noma is expected to close on New Year's Eve in 2016, before being replaced by a new business with an "urban farm" with a restaurant at its centre.

The ambitious project, which is expected to be similar to chef Dan Barber's Blue Hill at Stone Barns in New York, will relocate to Copenhagen's "freewheeling Christiania neighbourhood".

Meanwhile, Fäviken restaurant in Sweden, run by chef Magnus Nilsson, also won two stars. And A|O|C in Copenhagen holds two stars.

There were a total of 11 new one-star restaurants added to the guide, with five in Sweden, four in Denmark and two in Norway.

Rebecca Burr, who is editor in chief of the Michelin Nordic Guide, as well as the Michelin Great Britain and Ireland Guide, said: "This year's Nordic guide is particularly exciting. We are welcoming two new three-star restaurants, and, for the first time ever, expanding our reach beyond the major cities and out into the country."
