Planning permission granted for Hotel du Vin Stratford

Planners have given the go-ahead for the development of a 48-bedroom Hotel du Vin within two Georgian Grade II-listed buildings in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon.

The boutique brand originally announced its intention to open a hotel on the site in Rother Street, owned by the Stratford Town Trust, in May 2015, a month before Hotel du Vin and sister brand Malmaison were sold to Fraser Hospitality Group. Stratford District Council granted planning permission for the development yesterday.

Due to open in summer 2017, the hotel will feature the French-inspired Bistro du Vin, private dining rooms and a banqueting room for up to 80 guests. The hotel is expected to create 45 full-time and 20 part-time jobs.

Paul Roberts, chief executive of Malmaison Hotel du Vin, described the new hotel as "a perfect fit" for to the town, which attracts global visitors to Shakespeare's birthplace. "This development represents Malmaison Hotel du Vin's significant growth prospects and commitment to deliver exceptional customer experience in stunning surroundings."

Helen Munro, chief executive of Stratford Town Trust, added: "The Trust has been looking for some time at ways to enhance the Rother Street area - with our investment in the new Stratford ArtsHouse, work under way on a brand new shopping and leisure complex at Bell Court and now the arrival of Hotel du Vin, the future is very exciting."

The Stratford hotel is part of the wider expansion plans for Hotel du Vin and Malmaison, which number 16 and 13 hotels respectively. A decision is expected to be announced shortly regarding the rebranding - to either Malmaison or Hotel du Vin - of four hotels in Brighton, Bristol, Cheltenham and Exeter recently acquired by Frasers Hospitality Group for £36m.
