The 7 best openings of the week: featuring Duende and Theo Randall

A look at the latest restaurants, hotels, pubs and bars to open their doors

Duende

Victor Garvey has opened modern Spanish restaurant Duende on London's Maiden Lane. The restaurant and its open kitchen has been designed by Matteo Bianchi. It derives its name from the Spanish for ‘imp' or ‘sprite', although it can also mean ‘mischief' or ‘charm'. The restaurant initially opened for dinner only from Monday to Saturday, but a lunch and a Sunday lunch service are being added in the middle of this month.

Garvey said: "We will serve the kind of food I love to eat in the kind of restaurant I like to eat in. The dishes I'll be cooking are rooted in my Spanish parentage and childhood, but influenced by my travels and experience of working in restaurants around the world.

"I'm not looking to create anything brand new; we're not about serving the finest this or most authentic that. I just want it to be somewhere where everyone feels welcome, has a good time at their own speed, and leaves feeling they've had good value for the quality. Somewhere with, well, duende!"
