QHotels commits to creating 300 apprenticeships by 2017

QHotels has launched its ‘Get into Q' apprenticeship campaign as part of the company's commitment to create 100 new apprenticeships this year and a total of 300 by 2017.

The firm currently has 145 apprenticeships across its 26 four-star hotels and held a celebratory event last week to recognise the achievements of its existing kitchen and front of house apprentices.

It took place at the Stratford hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon and was attended by the town's MP, Nadhim Zahawi.

The entrepreneur and founder of market research company YouGov said he was impressed with the opportunities being offered by QHotels.

Apprentices produced and served afternoon tea and had the chance to talk to guests, which also included the Springboard charity and representatives from Stratford-upon-Avon College.

Zahawi said: "It was great to visit the Stratford hotel and speak to some of QHotels' impressive apprentices. Apprenticeships are a great way for both young people - who gain experience working in a real job, earning a wage while learning new skills - and for businesses as a way of securing a skilled workforce for the future. I would urge everyone to look into whether an apprenticeship is right for them, or whether apprentices are right for their business."

Chloe Gardner, an apprentice with QHotels at Stratford Manor, is completing a professional cookery level 3 course alongside her paid work.

She said: "A lot of people when they leave school start jobs where they don't learn anything. The reason I love my apprenticeship is that they don't throw you in the deep end; you get a lot of lessons and support. I love cooking, I get paid for it, and I'm learning the skills I need to grow my career. Starting my apprenticeship was the best decision I've made."

The day formed part of the ninth annual National Apprenticeship Week, which saw hundreds of events take place nationwide.

Geoffrey Roe, business relations manager from the Springboard Charity, added: "We're thrilled to be working with QHotels, who have made a strong commitment to future apprenticeships. We're pleased to support them with opportunities to provide people with sustainable employment in hospitality and we will continue to promote the industry as a great place to work."
