One Aldwych given permission to add 22 bedrooms in roof space

London's luxury One Aldwych hotel has been given the go-ahead to expand by 22 new rooms following a remodelling of the property's roof.

Planning permission has been granted by City of Westminster Council to reinstate the building's original dome and reconfigure the fourth and fifth floors of the hotel, which currently has 105 bedrooms. However, the hotel said there is no immediate plans to carry out the work.

The planning permission was granted to Jestico + Whiles, the architecture and interior design group which was responsible for converting the former offices of the Morning Post newspaper into a hotel in 1998.

Originally built in 1908, the grade II-listed building saw a new dome being added in 1928 during alternations. However, the intention is that the existing dome will be replaced with an authentic reproduction of the original dome created by architects Mewes and Davis.

James Dilley, head of interior design and hospitality at Jestico + Whiles said that the design will "enhance the profile and silhouette of the roof and draw on the building's rich history with features from the original architecture and association with the printing press industry."

A spokesperson for the hotel said: "In reference to the planning permission granted by the City of Westminster Council to One Aldwych for a roof remodelling, please note that there are no current specific plans."

One Aldwych's contemporary design and cutting edge environmental credentials were welcomed as a breath of fresh air at its launch, headed by Gordon Campbell Gray, who stepped down from operating the privately-owned hotel in 2011.
