Rampsbeck hotel in Cumbria gets green light for expansion

Planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment of the four-red-AA-star, 19-bedroom Rampsbeck hotel in Cumbria, as the launch pad of a new collection of individual, destination properties.

Another Place, launched last year by the owners of Cornwall's Watergate Bay hotel, will close Rampsbeck in September 2016 to undertake an extensive transformation of the building which will involve the addition of 20 bedrooms, including 12 family suites, and a 20m indoor swimming pool and treatment rooms.

"Our aim is to create a hotel that is distinct to its lake side location, blending all that is special about Rampsbeck with everything valued by Another Place."

Located in 18 acres of grounds overlooking Ullswater, Rampsbeck was built in the 1750s as a country house before being converted into a hotel in 1947. A central focus for guest visiting the new look hotel will be the opportunity to get involved in outdoor activities including guided open-water swimming, canoeing, walking and skiing.

The second hotel to join the Another Place collection will be the Royal William Yard in Plymouth which is currently being created within the Melville building, centred around a distinctive clock tower and courtyard overlooking the city's marina.

Another Place is to operate independently of the Watergate Bay hotel, which was founded by Ashworth's parents, John and Mary. Since taking over the running of the hotel in 2004, Watergate Bay has undergone a £8m redevelopment and now incorporates two restaurants in the hotel as well as the Beach Hut eaterie, the Extreme Academy, Swim Club and Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall.
