Magdalen Chapter Exeter to be rebranded a Hotel du Vin

Hotel du Vin is to open its 17th property following the re-branding of the 59-bedroom Magdalen Chapter in Exeter.

Magdalen Chapter was acquired by Frasers Hospitality, the owner of Hotel du Vin and sister brand Malmaison, in December 2015, alongside three other hotels from Hong Kong-based Swire Properties, in a £36.1m deal.

Situated close to Exeter cathedral in a grand 19th century building which formerly housed the West England Eye Hospital, the property opened in 2002 as the Hotel Barcelona under the ownership of the Alias Hotel Group, which was acquired four years later by Swire in 2006.

The building will now be transformed to a Hotel du Vin with its strong focus on food, wine, whisky and spirits.

Nick Halliday, chief operating officer of Hotel du Vin, said he is "delighted" about the new addition to the group. "This stunning property and historic city is a perfect fit for our brand. We can't wait to show guests how we do things - Hotel du Vin style".

Further announcements are expected soon regarding the rebranding to either Malmaison or Hotel du Vin of the two hotels bought from Swire: the 57-bedroom Avon Gorge hotel, Bristol, and the 60-bedroom Montpellier Chapter, Cheltenham.

Hotel du Vin's existing locations include Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Harrogate, Henley-on-Thames, Newcastle, Poole, St. Andrews, Tunbridge Wells, Wimbledon, Winchester and York.
