BHA has high expectations of new London Mayor

The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has said it has high expectations of Sadiq Khan, the new London Mayor, who will be in charge of the capital for the next four years.

Standing for Labour, Khan was elected to the post last Thursday (5 May) after beating Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith by 1,310,143 votes to 994,614.

After winning the mayoralty, he announced he would be standing down as the MP for Tooting, the constituency he has represented since 2005.

Khan's victory ends eight years of Conservative control of City Hall. He is the third Mayor of London after Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson.

Ufi Ibrahim, CEO of BHA, said: "The BHA has high expectations of the new Mayor of London and Assembly members.

"London is the world's most-visited capital city, generating over £36b in tourism revenue and £14b Gross Value Added by the hospitality industry. Our businesses employ one in ten Londoners. However, international rivalry is intense and we cannot take our competitiveness for granted."

She added: "It's not just our pubs, restaurants, hotels, serviced apartments, events, foodservice, clubs and attractions who have high expectations of the new Mayor. It's also the retailers, services, manufacturers, transport and construction industries whose success is interlinked with ours. The hospitality industry's success is integral to that of London.

The BHA represents more than 40,000 hospitality establishments in the UK.
