New entrance to the Berkeley will be Sir Richard Rogers' first hotel project
The first hotel project from leading architect Sir Richard Rogers will be unveiled in the coming weeks with the launch of the remodelled front entrance of the Berkeley hotel in London's Knightsbridge.
Located on the west façade of the five-red-AA-star, 210-bedroom hotel, a new entrance canopy made from glass, steel and carbon fibre beams will provide a strong architectural statement and feature new glazed pavilions flanking the main door. The extended spaces will accommodate an enlarged Blue Bar and the new Collins Room, which is being remodelled from the former Caramel Room all-day dining space.
The Collins Room had been named after the late interior designer David Collins, a long-time collaborator of the Maybourne Hotel Group, the owner of the Berkeley. Collins designed the original Blue Bar, in addition to other bars at the Berkeley's sister hotels, Claridge's and the Connaught.
Rob Angel, a protegee of Collins, has designed the hotel's new lobby, featuring soft timber panelling, and the Collins Room, incorporating pale marble mirrors, silk walls and contemporary chinoiserie.
