London Borough of Southwark up-and-coming tourist haunt, says Trivago

The London Borough of Southwark has trounced more traditional tourist haunts by coming out as the second most popular area in which to stay in the capital, according to research by Trivago.

Tower Hamlets is hipster heaven, the same survey asserts, while Camden is the go-to place for travellers on a budget. Westminster retains its crown as the most popular borough overall and the best neighbourhood for those seeking a little luxury.

The top five most popular boroughs are Westminster, Southwark, Camden, Newham, and Kensington and Chelsea respectively. The most central borough, City of London, trails in at ninth.

The report highlights Southwark, which encompasses the ever-popular South Bank area with its high density of hotels, as the best neighbourhood for families. A Trivago spokeswoman said: "It seems that Southwark is an up and coming area."

The average room rate in Southwark is the third highest in London at £177, behind City of London at £220 and Westminster at £204, but its average hotel rating is second only to City of London.

Tower Hamlets, one of the poorest boroughs in the country, is also home to a wide variety of hipster attractions, including controversial café Cereal Killers, where a breakfast bowl will set you back £3. Its vintage markets, restaurants, bars and "cutting edge art" scene are also lauded on Trivago.
