Sleeperz gears up expansion plans with Cityroomz Edinburgh hotel extension

Budget operator Sleeperz Hotels is boosting capacity at its Cityroomz Edinburgh hotel as part of wider expansion plans.

This latest plan closely follows an agreement for Sleeperz Hotels to open a new 120-bed hotel above Dundee railway station in 2017. The operator is also in discussions about opening hotels in Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, as well as having its sights on London.

The Edinburgh expansion plan will see Sleeperz Hotels develop Princes House, a listed building and three-storey office block, next door to its current 72-bed Cityroomz hotel on Shandwick Place in Edinburgh's West End. The development, which has been granted planning permission, is being carried out in partnership with property and investment company Town Centre Securities.

The new rooms will be available from June 2017 and will increase occupancy to 115 bedrooms. They include double, twin and family rooms and 10 suites with kitchenettes and living spaces.

David Myers, chief executive of Sleeperz Hotels, said: "Sleeperz Hotels is delighted to be expanding its market-leading Cityroomz operation.

"Our brand of low-cost, high-quality hotel stays has proven a winning formula nationally and we are confident that demand for stylish but affordable rooms in Edinburgh will keep growing."

Colin Steele, associate director at Caledonia Management, which is acting for Town Centre Securities, added: "This development is great news for Princes House and the West End of Edinburgh. The area is the cultural heart of Edinburgh, with its world heritage site, theatres, arts venues and stunning architecture.

"Cityroomz increased bed-stock is a welcome boost and provides affordable accommodation for tourists staying in this vibrant area."

The hotel operator said the hotel's location, close to Edinburgh International Conference Centre, is expected to attract business guests on long stays, who may want a suite environment, as well as families and groups.

Glasgow architects Maith Design have been engaged to transform the space and deliver the expansion plans.

Sleeperz opened its first UK hotel in Cardiff in 2008, followed by Sleeperz Newcastle in January 2012 and Cityroomz Edinburgh in May 2013.

The company is targeting major UK cities with a strategy which aims to provide stylish, design-led budget hotels under its Sleeperz and Cityroomz brands in distinctive city centre buildings. Its investors include Andre Hoffmann, Connection Capital and Costain.
