Texas Joe's opens first restaurant in London

Texas Joe's will be celebrating American Independence Day (4 July) by opening its first restaurant in Bermondsey, London.

Founder Joe Walters, a former Dragon's Den contestant who launched his own range of beef jerky and barbecue sauce, is opening the Texas BBQ restaurant, under the name Texas Joe's Slow Smoked Meats, on Snowsfields near Bermondsey street. The 70-cover restaurant will have a no reservations policy.

It will serve traditional meats and cuts slow-smoked over English oak in a custom 500lb-capacity rotisserie. The menu will feature USDA beef brisket, beef prime rib, pork shoulder, mutton shoulder and ribs. Texas Joe's will work with Bermondsey butcher Nathan Mills of the Butchery to source its English lamb.

All slow-smoked meats will be served with house-made pickles and bread, with a lunch option of brisket, pork shoulder or mutton shoulder stuffed into tacos or sandwiches. Side dishes include bone marrow with chilli salt, oxtail chilli and brisket nachos.

Menus will be printed in the style of a 1936 newspaper, while the restaurant's design has been inspired by backroad Texan BBQ joints. Furniture will be largely vintage or handmade and the bar will be separate from the restaurant space.

The bar will serve bourbons from Balcones Distilling and the Garrison Brothers Distillery, as well as Lone Star lager and beers from Camden Town and Bermondsey's Kernel Brewery.
