Trump to be targeted by mass demonstration at Turnberry Hotel relaunch
Donald Trump's Ayrshire golf resort Trump Turnberry looks set to be besieged by hundreds of protesters tomorrow (24 June) as the presidential candidate attends its official relaunch.
The mass protest, organised by Stand Up To Racism, is aimed at Trump, who will be at the relaunch of the 103-room property, following its eight month, £200m refurbishment.
The demonstration's organisers are calling on campaigners to join the protest from 10am on 24 June at Turnberry "to show that Donald Trump's brand of bigotry is not welcome in Scotland". Coaches have been organised to bus protesters to the site for the demonstration.
The protest has been prompted by Trump's controversial statement during his presidential campaign, including a call to keep Mexicans out of the US by building a wall along the border and for a ban on all Muslims entering the US.
A Stand Up to Racism Scotland spokesman said: "His message of hate is one that we'll challenge and we would not encourage anyone to support him in his presidency.
"Although this protest happens to be taking place in Scotland, we want to represent people across the whole of the UK and beyond who reject Trump's racism and Islamophobia."
However some locals will not be supporting the protest. Christina Auld, owner of the Links Lodge near the golf resort, told the BBC: "I think the whole village is looking forward to him coming here. He's made amazing changes to the hotel."
She added: "I think he's good for the area. He's bringing in a lot of revenue. The shops will be better. The restaurants round about. The historic sights will benefit from him. I just think he's going to make a great difference to the area."
The hotel is making contingency plans to ensure guests and staff get to the relaunch tomorrow. Police Scotland is also working with the hotel and protest groups ahead of the demonstration.
Earlier this week hotel booking site Earnaway removed all Trump hotels from its website. The founders said they felt it "ethically and morally wrong for us to effectively help fund and contribute to a political campaign that we have such strong opposition to".
