Trump says post-Brexit plunge in pound will benefit his hotel business
Donald Trump said his hotel business was set to benefit from the fall in the value of sterling following the UK's Brexit vote.
Pound sterling fell to its lowest value in thirty years following a 52% vote in favour of Brexit yesterday.
Speaking at the relaunch of the Trump Turnberry Hotel and golf course in Ayrshire, Scotland today, following its £200m refurbishment, Trump said: "Look, if the pound goes down (Scotland is) going to do more business. When the pound goes down more people are coming to Turnberry, frankly."
He added: "The pound has gone down and let's see what the impact is, but in places like Scotland and England and other places in Great Britain, I think you are going to see a lot of activity.
"The pound got high and people maybe couldn't do what they wanted to do and so for travelling and other things it could turn out positive."
As protesters jeered in the background Trump said it could take five years to see the impact of Brexit, adding: "Nobody knows, but what is known is that the UK has taken back control. It is a great thing."
In a speech designed to play to an American audience the presidential hopeful said the Brexit vote reflected similar views in the US and elsewhere. Trump's presidential campaign has seen him call for a ban on Muslims entering America and calls for a wall to be built between the USA and Mexico.
He said: "People do not necessarily want people pouring over their borders," he said. "The UK will be stronger for it."
"They have taken their independence back. They can block anyone coming in they do not think is appropriate."
