Welsh Tudor hotel on the market

The three-AA-star, Grade II-listed Great House Hotel in Wales, which has history stretching back to the Tudors, is on the market.

The 12-bedroom hotel in Laleston near Bridgend has been brought to the market by Colliers International for £935,000 for the freehold of the property. Current owners Stephen and Norma Bond have decided to retire after more than 30 years running the property.

The hotel, which was built in the late 15th century with 16th and 17th century additions, is said to have royal connections, including being home to Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII. It is believed to have been a gift from Queen Elizabeth I to the Earl of Leicester and recently hosted Prince Charles.

The Bonds bought the near-derelict building in 1985 and began an extensive refurbishment to restore it.

Its two-AA-rosette Leicester's restaurant also won Hotel Restaurant of the Year 2016 at the Welsh Food Awards.

In the meantime the business will continue under its present management.

Colliers International hotels director Peter Brunt believes the rich history of the hotel and its well-placed location, equidistant between Cardiff and Swansea, will be a draw for buyers.

He said: "With its wonderfully grand rooms a visit to the Great House is like stepping back in time. The hotel is beautifully presented with elegantly furnished rooms. Buyers will appreciate the care taken in the sympathetic refurbishment, and the fact that Stephen and Norma have continued to keep the hotel looking smart and contemporary."
