Travelodge expected to open Quayside hotel in Newcastle
Travelodge has submitted plans to develop a 120-bedroom hotel at Newcastle's Bridge Court and "breathe life" into the city's western Quayside.
The hotel would be developed on a site that used to be a BT office and has remained largely vacant for the last five years. It would include a ground floor restaurant and bar overlooking the Tyne.
The application, submitted by Union Retail Properties on 3 August, said the proposal seeks to breathe life back into the western end of the Quayside.
Planning permission was granted in 2013 for the building to become a 160-bedroom hotel with plans to add new floors to the venue, but these plans have been scaled back since Travelodge came on board. A council response is expected by the end of September, with construction work hoped to start in autumn 2016.
Travelodge, which currently has around 530 hotels across the UK, was unavailable for comment.
