Former Artisan owners to open North Yorkshire restaurant

Restaurateurs Lindsey and Richard Johns, former owners of Artisan in East Yorkshire, are set to open a new venture in North Yorkshire called Rascills.

Rascills will be a 24-cover, relaxed restaurant focusing on seasonal ingredients in the village of Raskelf in North Yorkshire. The village was itself once called Rascill, several centuries ago.

In addition to the restaurant, Rascills will have a separate area that will offer drinks, coffee and snacks during the day.

The new venture, which occupies what used to be the Purple Partridge, is set to open in the first week of October.

Husband-and-wife team Richard and Lindsey Johns rose to prominence while running the 16-cover Artisan in Hessle in East Yorkshire, which opened in December 2004. In that time it won several awards including being voted Best Restaurant 2010 in the Yorkshire Tourism awards, and Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year for the North East of England in 2011.

They then opened a venture in a country pub called the Falcon Inn in the East Yorkshire village of Withernwick, around 10 miles east of Beverley where they were awarded a place among the top 30 UK dining pubs in the Good Food Guide as well as a spot in the Michelin Pub Guide within 10 months of opening. However they left in March this year after they decided they had no future in Holderness after struggling to win over locals who wanted a drinking pub.

Earlier this year they went on to assist their friend Andrew Pern on the setting up of his restaurant in York but decided to move on from that project to set up a new business of their own.

"Despite our best efforts we soon realized being an employee was not for us. We had to be true to ourselves in recognizing that we had worked too long and too hard for ourselves to suddenly fit into another company's way of business," Richard said. "Lindsey and I knew Andrew Pern would do just fine without us and parted very amicably."

He added: "Rascills will be focusing on using the best seasonal ingredients served in our own style, in a warm and inviting environment. Lindsey will again oversee the front of house and I will be working the kitchen. The restaurant will be relaxed but with no cuts in standards. We intend to open during the day Tuesday to Saturday. Friday and Saturday nights and also a Sunday lunch service."
