Jarad McCarroll appointed head chef at Restaurant Ours

Durban-born chef Jarad McCarroll has been appointed as head chef at the Tom Sellers-run Restaurant Ours in South Kensington. McCarroll succeeds launch chef Daniel Phippard, who left the restaurant last month.

McCarroll moved to the UK from his native South Africa in 2008, and first worked at the Ritz in London, where he won an Annual Awards of Excellence. After three years at the Ritz he worked at the Harwood Arms, followed by Kitchen W8, Chiltern Firehouse and M Restaurant in Threadneedle Street, where he held the position of head chef and also assisted with the opening of the Victoria branch.

Michelin-starred chef Sellers opened the restaurant with Phippard in May and propelled Ours into the spotlight the following month when he turned the tables on a scathing review by Fay Maschler by writing his own critique of her article.

Writing in her column in the Evening Standard, the food critic described a dish of ratatouille as "for the Instagram, not the mouth" and awarded the restaurant a damning 1 out of 5. Sellers retorted with a blog post entitled "Faymous: A response".

Restaurant Ours, a 120-cover European-inspired concept, assumed the site previously home to the Collection on Brompton Road, and serves classic and contemporary dishes.

While Sellers is described as culinary director of Restaurant Ours, he is mostly based at the five-AA-rosette Restaurant Story in Tooley Street, Bermondsey, and also operates British pub the Lickfold Inn in Petworth, West Sussex.
