Hotel dubbed ‘Britain's worst' closed down by council

The Fiorenzo Cazari hotel in the Welsh seaside resort of Rhyl, dubbed the "worst in Britain" by TripAdvisor users, has been shut down by council inspectors.

Fire chiefs and safety inspectors slapped the hotel with an enforcement order and all guests were immediately evacuated amid fears that they could be electrocuted by unsafe electrical installations.

A sign was placed at the front of the hotel warning other potential visitors about a "risk of electrocution, receiving an electric shock or fire".

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: "A Council Health and Safety Inspector has served a Prohibition Notice under the Health and Safety at Work Act due on the ‘Fiorenzo Cazari Hotel' in Rhyl due to an unsafe electrical installation. This notice prohibits the use of the premises indefinitely until work is done to satisfy that the electrical installation does not pose a risk of serious injury or fire."

Meanwhile, TripAdvisor lists the hotel as "temporarily closed".

Reviews on the website average 1.5/5, with one guest describing it as "my worst nightmare" and another as "the worst hotel in Britain".

A third highlighted some of the dangers that prompted the council to close the hotel down, commenting: "The place is disgusting, dirty, smelly and very dangerous with electrical fittings hanging off the wall."

Not everyone was put off, however. One reviewer added: "Clean beds, yes the buildings a bit old but what do you expect? Personally I think it's a good cheap hotel."

Owner and lawyer John Washington was jailed in September this year for eight months for perverting the course of justice.

No-one from the hotel was immediately available to comment.
