Twenty-one year old Matthew Cheal from Simpson’s Restaurant in Kenilworth has been voted the best young chef in the Midlands.
Matthew won The Midlands Association of Chefs, Young Chef of the Year 2002 award at the Grand Final cook-off held at Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies on Monday 14th October.
Young Chef of the Year, sponsored by Nestlé FoodServices, is one of the most prestigious competitions in the Midlands. It was first introduced five years ago by The Midlands Association of Chefs (MAC) with the aim of encouraging and supporting young chefs to strive for excellence within their chosen profession. The competition is open to all junior members of the association aged 23 or under as of January 1st 2003.
Matthew scooped the award for his menu of Pan Fried Fillets of Red Mullet, Goats Cheese Tortellini’s Rocket, Green Bean and Red Pepper Coulis (starter), Parentier of Pot Roast Guinea Fowl with Comit Carrot, Pomme Galet and Tarragon Sauce (main course) and White Chocolate Mousse with Aromatic Pineapple Brochette and Passion Fruit Sauce (sweet course).
