Claridge's five-storey basement expansion given green light

Claridge's hotel in London has been given planning permission to add seven storeys to its Mayfair property, including five in the basement.

The plans were given the green light at a Westminster Council planning applications committee meeting last night (6 December). The addition of the extra two storeys above ground will add 40 bedrooms to the five-red-AA-star hotel's existing 197, while the basement expansion would make way for a swimming pool, sauna, spa, bakery and chocolatier, as well as wine stores, staff facilities, conference rooms and a gym.

Councillor Robert Davis, Westminster City council deputy leader, said: "Additional basements on an already major refurbishment of the historic Claridge's hotel in a commercial part of the city was regarded as proportional bearing in mind the consequential enhancements to this world famous world class hotel.

"In particular, the extended basement will provide a new spa which will ensure that Claridge's remains a sophisticated, modern five-star hotel that can compete with global competition. We're proud of Westminster's reputation as the home of luxury, a reputation that attracts millions of visitors to our city every year."

A spokesperson for Claridge's, which is part of the Maybourne Hotel Group, said: "Claridge's is excited about our future development plans to put in to place state of the art, sustainable technology and systems which will further enhance services for our guests, staff and neighbours, taking this iconic Mayfair hotel's vision into the next century."
