Pubs make way for coffee shops but are still most popular leisure venue

Pubs are making way for more coffee shops and restaurants in British high streets but are still the most popular leisure venues in the UK.

That's according to a BBC analysis of Local Data Company figures which showed that between 2011 and 2016, the number of town centre pubs, bars and nightclubs fell by about 2000.

The number of cafés, fast-food outlets and restaurants has risen by about 6,000 across England, Scotland and Wales over the same period.

There are still more pubs than coffee shops in town centres.

The largest growth areas included lounge bars (116%), cake makers (51%), juice bars (46%) and speciality restaurants. There was also a 31% increase in the number of coffee shops.

Comedy clubs (-33%), snooker halls (-34%), internet cafés (-41%) and bingo halls (-22%) saw some of the biggest falls.
