Chewton Glen evacuated after fire

Chewton Glen had to be evacuated just after midnight on Sunday (29 January) after a fire broke out in the five-star Hampshire hotel's laundry room.

Fortunately, all guests and staff at the hotel, in New Milton, were accounted for.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service sent 14 fire engines to the scene and reportedly required 24 sets of breathing apparatus to put out the blaze. Forty-eight fire fighters were also in attendance. All items in the hotel's laundry were incinerated, according to the BBC.

The fire was later contained and guests were able to return to their rooms at 4am.

A statement released by Chewton Glen said: "At just after midnight on Sunday, 29 January, a fire broke out in the first floor laundry room at Chewton Glen, the alarm was sounded and the hotel's fire management team evacuated all guests staying at the hotel into the safety of the ground floor lounge areas.

"Responding to the call out were fire crews from nearby New Milton, Lymington and Redbridge, together with response support vehicles, environmental protection support, and command and incident units from the headquarters of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services who attended the incident and quickly brought the situation under control.

"Although the laundry has been damaged, mainly by smoke, no other areas of the building have been affected. While it is too soon to comment on the cause of the incident, we can confirm that no person was injured and the fire services involved praised the action and quick response of the hotel's management team in containing the incident and guaranteeing the safely of all hotel guests and staff in the building."

Chewton Glen's managing director, Andrew Stembridge, commented: "A full report will be prepared, but I would like to thank the amazing teams from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services for their rapid response to this incident and for their invaluable help and assistance in dealing with this situation."

In July last year, the hotel, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016, was named best in the country in The Caterer and Sky's Hoteliers' Hotels Top 100.
