Paul Roberts is to leave Malmaison and Hotel du Vin (MHdV) as chief executive, five years after joining the company as finance director.
He will not be directly replaced when he leaves the company on 30 June, but his responsibilities will be taken over by Guus Bakker, chief executive, Europe, Middle East and Africa of MHdV’s owner, Frasers Hospitality.
Bakker will oversee Scott Harper and Nick Halliday who are chief operating officers respectively for Malmaison and Hotel du Vin.
Roberts, who is yet to announce his next career move, said he had “greatly enjoyed” his time at Malmaison Hotel du Vin. “I have no doubt the brands will continue to grow, innovate and lead the way whilst staying true to their principles of outstanding service and unique experiences. They have great future ahead. However, after five years with the business, I feel the time is right for me to embark on the next phase of my career.”
The news of Roberts’ departure was announced to MHdV staff in an email from Choe Peng Sum, chief executive of Singapore-based Frasers Hospitality Group.
He said: “Over the past five years, Paul has always been an infectious advocate of the brands and his people. He leaves a team at MHdV, who are just as passionate and proud of MHdV, and for that we thank Paul for his commitment to the business and the brands. We wish Paul success in his future endeavours.”
Roberts joined Malmaison and Hotel du Vin in 2012 as finance director and moved up to chief executive following the sale of MHdV by American company KSL Capital Partners for £363.4m to Frasers Hospitality Group in 2015. He replaced Gary Davis, who moved to KSL as chief executive of Village Hotel Club.
Prior to joining MHdV, Roberts was finance director of De Vere Hotels, having previously worked for Morgans Hotel Group, MacDonald Hotels and Raffles International.
Malmaison currently operates 15 hotels and is set to open a property in York in 2018, while Hotel du Vin has 17 properties, with its 18th launching in Stratford-upon-Avon at the end of the year.
