Second Calcutta Street to open in Brixton
Restaurateur Shrimoyee Chakraborty is set to bring her Bengali home dining concept Calcutta Street to Brixton, south London.
Opening in June, the new restaurant will have a different atmosphere to the first site, which opened in Fitzrovia last summer. While the Fitzrovia restaurant is about casual dining in a relaxed, homely atmosphere, the new Brixton venue is inspired by its livelier neighbourhood and Calcutta's busy Park Street.
Walls will be decorated with hand-painted murals, neon signage, posters featuring works by Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and memorabilia from the artists who brought the swing to Park Street. It will also feature antique wall lights, ostrich and peacock feathers, and palm trees.
The Brixton restaurant menu will mirror Fitzrovia's, featuring a mixture of street food and main dishes, with new additions including biryani and chicken chaap, a rich Mughlai dish slow-cooked in a creamy poppy seed and cashew nut sauce. However, the emphasis will be on smaller plates at a lower price point.
