The Old Course completes first phase of £17m refurbishment

The £10m, three-month refurbishment of the five-red-AA-star Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St Andrews, Fife, includes a rubber roof to prevent ongoing damage from golf balls.

As well as the new roof from Euroshield, work has also been completed on the decoration of 103 of the 144 bedrooms and the replacement of the hotel’s windows.

As the hotel sits alongside the 17th road hole of the renowned Old Course, the roof is frequently damaged by dents and cracks from flying golf balls.

A further £7m is now to be spent on upgrading and extending the hotel’s Kohler Waters Spa, which will see the development of a new pool, larger gym, spa café and work-out rooms.

The new-look bedrooms feature a contemporary design in light colours, with a nod to Scottish traditions. New features include USB charging points, ergonomic electrical outlets and closet lighting.

Stephen Carter, general manager of the hotel, said: “Our overall aim was to respect our most iconic areas of the hotel. People visit our resort from all over the world to experience Scottish elegance and we’ve been very careful to blend this seamlessly into the refurbished parts of the hotel.”

Further projects planned for the hotel include the launch of an elite sports facility catering to world-class sports teams.

The Old Course hotel has been owned by American company Kohler Co since 2004. Last month it became a member of sales and marketing consortium Preferred Hotels & Resorts Legend Collection.
