Hotel plans for Wynyard Golf Club scaled back

Scaled-back plans for a five-star hotel on the site of Wynyard Golf Club, near Durham, have been submitted to Stockton-on-Tees borough council.

Permission for a 150-bedroom hotel on the site was granted in May 2016. The previous proposals focused on attracting significant numbers of new visitors to Wynyard and envisaged the demolition of the existing golf clubhouse and the creation of a new, integrated hotel and golf facility. The new proposals suggest a smaller development and enhancements to the existing golf club facilities.

Developer Jomast has now re-submitted plans for a three-storey hotel with leisure facilities including an indoor swimming pool, outdoor tennis courts, a spa and gym; a restaurant; and 44 executive homes.

The design statement read: "The hotel, whilst more modest in scale than the currently consented 150 bed hotel, is still intended, in conjunction with the adjoining leisure facilities, to function compositionally as the ‘country house' at the centre of the newly landscaped park."
