Crowdfunding appeal launched for Manchester Hospital staff to have a drink

On Monday evening (22 May) 22 people were killed and 59 injured after an explosion at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena. Greater Manchester police said the attack was conducted by one man, who died at the scene.

A crowdfunding page was set up by Ed Hall, a volunteer for a lifeboat crew in London, who aimed to raise £1,000 to go toward the bar bill.

On the crowdfunding page, Hall said: "I listened to the awful news this morning and thought I'd like to put a few quid behind the bar at a pub near the Manchester Royal Infirmary. I know alcohol isn't the answer to the stress and trauma that the emergency services have experienced today, but it seems a simple and easy way to say thank you. I'm putting £100 behind the bar, any amount you can afford I'll add it to mine."

As the donations surpassed the £10,000 mark, Hall added: "I am speechless. We have raised £10,000 to buy a drink for the wonderful men and women who are working so hard to help those affected by the terrible events in Manchester. Nothing we've done today will fix the damage, or lessen the pain of those directly affected, but emergency service and hospital workers should know that if we were there now, we would buy them a drink. Of course we would. Who wouldn't? Thank you."

Turing Tap, owned by Stonegate Pub Company, also promised to provide free food for hospital staff.

Zoe O'Sullivan from Stonegate Pub Company said: "We thank our emergency services for the huge efforts following the tragic events last night. Honouring staff from Manchester Royal Infirmary is a great tribute but knowing how many more NHS staff we can now thank is incredible."
