Two hotels planned for Edinburgh's Exchange district
Plans to build two hotels in Edinburgh's Exchange district as part of a mixed-use development have been revealed through a planning application to the City of Edinburgh Council.
A 300-bedroom and a 250-bedroom hotel would be the cornerstones of a three-building development around the city's Conference Square, which would also involve food and drink outlets, and retail and office space. Plans drawn up by JM Architects have been submitted by Scott Hobbs Planning on behalf of Scottish Power Energy Networks.
The application suggests that the proposed development would reinvigorate the area and "significantly enhance its attractiveness as a destination".
A decision about the scheme is expected to be made by the council by October 2017, with on the site set to start in January 2018.
It is thought the hotels would be in the midscale to upscale sector. The application, which has taken the delegate profile of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) into account, said the "proliferation of budget hotels in the city has undermined the EICC's ability to secure a number of international conference events".
