Mercure Newcastle George Washington Hotel Golf & Spa to add 22 bedrooms

The Mercure George Washington Hotel Golf & Spa in Tyne & Wear is to undertake a £1.8m, 22-bedroom extension, as part of a wider upgrade of the property.

Located 15 minutes from the centre of Newcastle, the hotel will increase its bedroom count from 103 to 125 and will include a 45 sq m bridal suite. The work is expected to be completed in May next year.

Sunderland-based Wearside Construction has been appointed to build the extension.

Over the past three years, the property, owned by Ailantus Hotels, has enjoyed a multimillion-pound investment which has included the addition of the Orangery wedding venue and the Cater & Fitch Pizzeria and Smokehouse and the creation of a new driving range.

Next year planning permission will be sought for a £5m spa and leisure club at the hotel.

Ailantus Hotels owns and operates seven hotels in the north of England.
