Student dies outside Missoula night club in Durham

A 20-year-old student has died outside Missoula night club in Durham with witnesses reporting a crush outside the venue.

When police arrived at the  Stonegate Pub Company-owned venue last night, the student was being resuscitated by door staff. The ambulance service arrived and continued attempts to revive her but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: “We were alerted to an incident in Walkergate, Durham at 11.53pm last night. A 20-year-old woman had suffered serious injuries in the vicinity of the Missoula night club.

“Ambulance crews assisted by police officers attended to the casualty but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

“Officers cordoned off the area, which was busy at the time, and an investigation was launched into the circumstances leading up to the tragedy. The area remains cordoned off and police staff are liaising with university staff and students.”

Eyewitnesses told the Northern Echo that the woman had become trapped under a fallen barrier as students queued to enter the nightclub.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out this afternoon, with formal identification yet to take place.
