The Grand Hotel & Spa in York opens 100 new bedrooms

The five-AA-star Grand Hotel & Spa in York has doubled in size with the opening of 100 additional bedrooms.

Costing £15m, the expansion to the hotel takes the property's total bedroom count up to 207.

The new bedrooms were unveiled by Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, and Lord Mayor of York, councillor Barbara Boyce, alongside the hotel's general manager Philip Bolson and chief executive of Splendid Hospitality, the hotel's owner, Stuart Bailey.

Sir Gary said the hotel had gone "from strength to strength" since opening eight years ago. "Welcome to Yorkshire is very proud to be associated with the enhancement of such an iconic and historically important building, which I'm sure will continue to attract more tourists from across the world."

Inspired by the Grande's Edwardian heritage as the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, the bedrooms are the latest element of the property's refurbishment which has included the opening of the Rise restaurant, terrace and bar and the relaunch of Hudsons by Craig Atchinson, the hotel's three-AA-rosette restaurant.

The Grand has also recently opened the White Rose Lounge serving complimentary food and drinks to the hotel's guests, while work will soon begin on an Arrival Lounge.

Splendid Hospitality Group is owner of 20 hotels in the UK operating under a variety of brands, including the Conrad London St James.
