Signature Living's Harris hotel to open as second Shankly hotel

Signature Living's ‘Harris hotel' in Preston's Old Post Office will be the group's second Shankly hotel when it opens in September.

The £15m, 65-bedroom Shankly Hotel Preston follows the group's Shankly hotel in Liverpool, a tribute to footballer William ‘Bill' Shankly. The group has several other football-themed hotels in the pipeline including the Dixie Dean in Liverpool and the George Best hotel in Belfast.

The hotel will also be developed in collaboration with the Shankly family and will be led by Bill Shankly's grandson Chris Carline, who is also co-owner and curator of the first Shankly hotel, along with Signature Living chairman Lawrence Kenwright.

Shankly signed for Preston North End 1933 and played with them in two FA Cup finals, winning the trophy in 1938. He was also a member of the Preston team that won the 1941 Wartime Cup Final at Wembley, before retiring in 1949 and going on to become manager of Liverpool FC in 1959.

Kenwright said: "The Shankly hotel is to not only celebrate his [Shankly's] iconic footballing career and achievements but to honour the very special relationship he had with the city and people of Preston, having signed for Preston North End in 1933."

Carline added: "It is a fitting tribute and legacy to my grandfather for a hotel to be named in his honour in Liverpool, but it is also important for his legacy to be honoured in Preston where he spent much of his playing career."

The 114-year-old, former Grade II-listed post office building will have a similar design to the Liverpool hotel, and will feature Shankly memorabilia.

The property was originally referred to as the Harris hotel, after Preston lawyer Edmund Harris, the principal benefactor of the Harris Museum, Harris Institute or Art School, Harris Technical School and Harris Orphanage.
