Moxy hotel to open on Solihull NEC campus

A 224-bedroom Moxy hotel is set to open on the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) complex in Solihull next year.

Construction on the eight-storey hotel is expected to begin in June after planning permission was secured earlier this year from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council by Dutch-based developer Vastint Hospitality. It is due to open in mid-2019 under Marriott International's lifestyle brand.

The hotel will be constructed in modular cross-laminated timber pods, which will be manufactured in Italy and then transported in sections and assembled on-site.

The hotel follows recent investment in the campus, with a Merlin Entertainments-operated Bear Grylls Adventure experience due to open on the site later this year. Hilton, Crowne Plaza and the Genting hotel already operate at the site.

John Hornby, NEC Group's chief operating officer, said: "This new hotel is an excellent addition to our site's profile and will complement the existing range of hotels on site and in the surrounding area."

Emma Gray, director of marketing and communications at the West Midlands Growth Company, the regional body responsible for tourism, added: "Moxy's arrival on the NEC campus will give visitors a new choice when coming to the region for events and exhibitions, and to sample our leisure offer."

The largest Moxy at 437 bedrooms opened at London's Heathrow Airport this week, the fifth Moxy to open in the UK in addition to properties in Aberdeen, Glasgow and in London at ExCeL and Stratford.

Four more Moxy hotels are slated to open in the UK in 2018, including Glasgow (181 bedrooms), Edinburgh (230 bedrooms), Southampton (209 bedrooms) and York (119 bedrooms). The brand has 20 hotels worldwide, with a further 90 properties in the global pipeline.
