Nira Caledonia reopens following devastating fire
The Nira Caledonia hotel in Edinburgh has reopened following a devastating fire at the property last year.
The 28-bedroom hotel has undertaken a nine-month, £1.4m refurbishment to restore the property's original period cornicing and plasterwork and refit 14 of its bedrooms, overseen by Jeffreys Interiors.
Located over two townhouses on Gloucester Place, the property was home to 19th-century bon viveur and hedonist, John Wilson, who wrote under the pseudonym Christopher North.
General manager Chris Lynch said: "We think, in no time, Nira Caledonia will be seen as Edinburgh's premier boutique hotel."
The Nira Caledonia is part of hotel and leisure company Shanti Hospitality, which has two other properties in the Nira portfolio: Nira Alpina in St Moritz, Switzerland, and Shanti Maurice in Mauritius. It is also a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Filip Boyen, chief executive of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, said: "We are delighted that Nira Caledonia will be fully open once again… We encourage guests to use this reopening as a reason to visit, or revisit, this wonderful city."
The reopening also marks the relaunch of the Blackwood's Bar and Grill, named after the 19th-century Blackwood's magazine for which Wilson wrote.
