CO2 shortage threatens UK pub beer supplies
A shortage in carbon dioxide (CO2) supplies could threaten the beer supplies of British pubs during the World Cup season.
The situation may have already impacted beer producers nationally as supply issues in the UK are being complicated by a combination of planned plant shutdowns and unexpected equipment failure, particularly at one of the two major national producers of bulk CO2.
CO2 puts the fizz into soft drinks, canned and bottled beers, as well as at pub pumps.
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) is aware of the situation and has contacted the two companies involved, as well as the British Soft Drinks Association and relevant government departments.
The BBPA said: "Whilst we will continue to contact those involved and to reiterate the impact of such a shortage on the brewing industry, the situation at present is very much in the hands of the producers themselves. We understand that the shortage may last for at least the next few weeks and that one supplier has already been in contact with their customers to notify them of force majeure."
The association recommended that members contact their supplier if they have any specific concerns.
