The Edgbaston to add 14 bedrooms

Independent cocktail bar and boutique hotel the Edgbaston has secured planning  permission to build an additional 14 bedrooms.

Work has already started on the construction of the new wing, to be built next door to the current hotel on Highfield Road on the Calthorpe Estate in the heart of Edgbaston Village, Birmingham. The rooms are expected to open towards the end of this year.

Stuart Insall, co-owner of the Edgbaston, which currently has six bedrooms and three cocktail lounges, said: “We wanted to be sure that the two buildings will blend seamlessly so the new rooms will follow an art deco theme, whilst retaining period features such as sash windows and high ceilings, which will also make the most of the natural light.”

The Moet & Chandon terrace is also set to expand. Once the expansion is finished by the end of this year, the terrace will double in size from 70 to 140 covers.

Natasha Walkden, sales and marketing manager for Calthorpe Estates, added: “Expanding this flagship boutique hotel – which has the only Moet & Chandon terrace outside of London… will enable both the Edgbaston, and the Estate as a whole, to continue to meet the increasing demand for somewhere unique to visit.

“The Edgbaston is a family-owned business, winning awards for its cocktail lounge and afternoon tea, and is run by two brothers whose aim is to show the world that Edgbaston, Birmingham and the Midlands are places worth knowing. We are delighted to be able to work with them to prove this.”

The Edgbaston opened in 2014 and is owned by Stuart and Darren Insall, with Jayne O’Malley as hotel group general manager.
