Hawksmoor to open flagship New York site in 2019

Hawksmoor will open a 180-cover flagship New York site in 2019 following five years of planning.

The site is in the former United Charities Building (pictured below) between Madison Square Park and Gramercy Park and will also include a 50-cover bar.

Huw Gott, co-founder of Hawksmoor: "We have found what we believe is the perfect Hawksmoor restaurant space in New York: a beautiful national historic landmark, built as the United Charities Building in 1893 with an incredible 10m-ceilinged assembly hall that will be the main room of our restaurant."

Fellow co-founder Will Beckett added: "When we open in 2019, Hawksmoor New York will have been five years in the making.

"While that has felt like an incredibly long wait, it has given us the opportunity to get to know New York intimately, meet the people who make the industry tick, eat extensively in its amazing restaurants and find some passionate farmers, fishermen and suppliers."

The pair will be taking their menu concept across the Atlantic offering "dictionary thick" cuts of beef alongside seafood, bar snacks and vegetable dishes.

Hawksmoor was founded in 2006 and has grown to eight sites.

In September 2017, Hawksmoor's owner Underdog reported a £9m pre-tax loss for the financial year ending 31 December 2016, which Beckett put down to Hawksmoor's sister brand Foxlow having a "pretty tough time". The Hawksmoor arm of the business made a pre-tax profit of £4.2m in the same period.

The company has since closed Foxlow Chiswick.
