First stage of £50m redevelopment of Falmouth's St Michaels Hotel & Spa now complete

St Michaels Hotel & Spa in Falmouth, Cornwall, will officially relaunch as a luxury international-style resort next month following a £20m redevelopment.
The transformation of the hotel from a four-AA-star property with 61 bedrooms to one with 84 rooms and spa with the largest hydrotherapy pool in the south west and 10 treatment rooms has taken place after owner Nigel Carpenter secured investment from CBRE Global Investors, BH Group and Acorn Property Group.

A further £30m will now be pumped into the development by the investors with the building of 53 self-catering, sea-facing apartments. Work on the residential project will get underway in the autumn.

Carpenter had originally put the hotel on the market in 2015 for £20m with planning permission to undertake the development, but after teaming up with developer James Houlston of BH Hotels and securing the necessary finance, decided to head the project himself.

Nikki Broom, previously hotels director at Red Hotels, owner and operator of the Scarlet and Bedruthan Steps hotels in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, was appointed as resort director of St Michael's in June.

Located above Gyllyngvase beach, St Michaels' new bedrooms in the Beach House draw inspiration from the coastal surroundings with a colour palette of blue and white, nautical art and headboards made from reclaimed wood.

Alongside the treatment rooms, the spa offers 21 massage stations, the world's first Cornish sea salt steam room, a Moroccan rhassoul offering a mud-steam experience and a total of 60 treatments.

Additionally, the resort features a 13,000 sq ft health club with a gym and studios for fitness, spin classes and rowing. There is also an indoor swimming pool and four tennis courts.

Carpenter, chairman of the resort, said: "Following this extensive refurbishment, St Michaels is a new destination for the south west, set on one of the most beautiful pieces of England's coastline and on the edges of a bustling local community. St Michaels is a luxury resort with unequalled spa, health and fitness facilities and testament to the fact that the British seaside has grown up. We are Cornish, we are cool, we are here!"
