£25m Courtyard by Marriott Sandy Park given green light
A £25m Courtyard by Marriott hotel is set to be built within Exeter's Sandy Park complex.
Planning permission has been granted by Exeter City Council for the 250-bedroom, nine-storey property to be built at the complex, home to the Exeter Chiefs rugby club, which will own the hotel. Marriott International will manage the hotel under a 30-year lease.
Building work is due to begin in the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2019 and is expected to take a year to complete.
The hotel will also provide leisure facilities on the ground floor, and a rooftop cocktail bar and restaurant overlooking the River Exe Estuary.
The facility will be accessible via a glazed bridge, and will have an open plan bar, coffee bar and lounge. The basement of the hotel will provide spa and fitness facilities, including a sauna, steam room and gym, as well as meeting rooms and a 24-hour "marketplace" for drinks and snacks.
Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe said: "For a number of years Exeter has had a need for a good four-star hotel within the city. We have got some very nice hotels and some budget hotels, but there's been a growing need for something like the Sandy Park hotel… We feel the new hotel will not only enhance the amenities here at Sandy Park, but within the city of Exeter as a whole."
