Body of man recovered from Aberystwyth hotel following fire

The body of a man has been recovered from the Belgrave House hotel, Aberystwyth, following a devastating fire in July.

In the aftermath of the blaze, on 25 July, emergency services confirmed that one man was unaccounted for and said police were liaising with the Lithuanian Embassy to trace his next of kin.

The damage to the building meant emergency services were unable to enter and conduct a search for more than a month after the fire.

Today police said: "Police can confirm that the remains of a male have been recovered during the search at Belgrave House hotel, Aberystwyth.

"The remains have not yet been identified. The family of the missing Lithuanian man have been informed of this development."

A home office post mortem has been arranged and the coroner informed.

Damion Harris of Llanbadarn, Aberystwyth, has appeared in court charged with arson with intent to endanger life in relation to the fire. The 30-year-old was remanded in custody and a mention is scheduled at Swansea Crown Court later this month.
