Nottingham hotel closed by council after more than 100 incidents
The Stage hotel in Nottingham has been closed after more than 100 criminal incidents were recorded at the property over two and a half years, including sexual offences.
The 58-bedroom hotel was initially served a closure order by the City Council's community protection team on 29 June, which expired on 29 September. The council, working with Nottinghamshire Police, has secured a further three-month closure order for the hotel following a successful court application. The new order will run until 29 December.
Between November 2015 and May 2018 more than 100 incidents of concern were recorded regarding the premises, including sexual offences, child sexual exploitation, assaults, domestic violence, public order offences, theft, drug related offences and other anti-social behaviour.
Despite engagement by the council, police and other partner agencies with those connected with the ownership and management of the hotel, no improvement in behaviours were forthcoming, prompting the council to seek the closure of the premises.
The court hearing was attended by the property's landlord Gurdip Singh, and James Johnson, who is described as having significant control of the business on Companies House.
Portfolio holder for community protection, councillor Toby Neal, said: "We're pleased the application wasn't contested by either the owner or leaseholder, and that the order allows for the owner to take action to carry out repairs to the property and to ensure it is secured…
"We are committed to tackling all forms of anti-social and criminal activity and ensuring that those who manage hotels and similar premises understand their responsibility and accountability for behaviours that take place on their premises. Robust action will be taken in cases where those responsibilities are not met."
