Guests and staff safe following Skibo Castle fire

All guests and staff were evacuated safely after a fire broke out at Skibo Castle earlier this week, however the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Two people were assisted to safety by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews and there were no casualties. It is understood that there will be an investigation but the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Peter Crome, chairman of the 20-bedroom private members' club in the Scottish Highlands, said: "Due to the fact that the fire was quickly contained, disruption has thankfully been limited and just a few rooms have suffered water damage. We are now fully open and operating as normal.

"We are grateful for the quick action of the emergency services and also for the exceptional response of our own staff, who assisted guests and volunteered to help in any way they could."

At approximately 8.30pm on 15 October the fire alarm was raised by a member of staff. A total of six fire engines and one aerial appliance were mobilised to the property, near Dornoch, which is home to the Carnegie Club.

The fire was located in a roof space on the third floor at the front of the castle and contained within that space.

Those staying in the castle were relocated to lodges on the estate and to hotels in Dornoch. The fire brigade left at approximately 1.30am with one unit remaining to check that the building was safe.

Mark Loynd, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service's group manager for the Highlands, said: "I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the swift and professional response of our firefighters. This was a challenging incident at a famous and very historic building, but our crews responded effectively to consign the fire to one small area.

"I would also like to thank our teams in operations control and our partners whose assistance was invaluable in helping to protect the community."
