Aloft London Tobacco Dock ‘on hold'
Marriott's Aloft Tobacco Dock hotel development in east London is ‘on hold', The Caterer understands.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts announced plans to build a dual-branded Aloft and Element hotel on the site with owner, international investment company the Fawzia Mubarak Al Hassawi Group, in 2014, with completion expected for 2017.
The opening date of the hotel was pushed back to 2018 in 2016 and Marriott completed its acquisition of Starwood later that year. The development is now "on hold", and while there have been some delays and the project is behind schedule, the owner is believed to still be planning to pursue the opening.
The hotel was planned to be split between the mid-market brands, with 251 bedrooms under the design-led Aloft brand and 77 studios under Element, which was supposed to be the debut of the eco-friendly brand in the UK.
Marriott has 37 Element hotels worldwide, two in Europe in Germany and the Netherlands, and 155 Aloft-branded hotels including two in the UK: the Aloft Liverpool and the Aloft London Excel. The brands are two of Marriott's 30 hotel brands.
