Farnborough College come out on top at Craft Guild's Heat competition

A team of hospitality students from the Farnborough College of Technology in Hampshire has been named winners of this year's Heat culinary competition.

Established by the Craft Guild of Chefs, Heat sees teams from hospitality education - including one lecturer and four students serving both in front and back of house roles - compete. Of the 10 teams to apply, only three made it to this year's final - with Farnborough narrowly beating out two-time reigning champions from Jersey.

Each team was also assigned a professional mentor - including Lee Smith of Samphire who led the Jersey team from Highlands Academy; Frances Atkins of the Yorke Arms who led the Middlesborough team; and Paul McKnight, executive chef at Culloden Estate, oversaw the South Eastern Regional College from Bangor.

Each college cooked a three-course lunch or dinner that was judged by four top chefs in the UK catering industry at the Highlands Academy Restaurant.

Wimbledon executive chef Rob Kennedy, who mentored the winning team, said: "It is an honour to be recognised in this way and I am so proud of the team. This competition is all about the students and they have worked tirelessly, practising and preparing for Heat 2019.

"The Farnborough students came here determined to win, and they did it! All of the colleges taking part delivered outstanding services and exceptional food. We have loved visiting Jersey and it was a privilege to lead the team."
