Edinburgh's Market Street hotel to open in June

Carlton Hotel Collection's £20m Market Street hotel in Edinburgh will open to guests on 17 June.

The 98-bedroom hotel will be the first Scottish member of marketing consortium Design Hotels. It will feature a rooftop Champagne lounge overlooking Waverley Valley called Nor Loft, named after the Nor Loch lake that used to sit at the foot of Edinburgh Castle and has since dried up.

Construction of the hotel began in May 2016 and it was originally set for a September 2017 opening. This was later postponed to summer 2018 and is now confirmed for summer.

The group has described the site as "a huge design challenge". It is surrounded by historic buildings on three sides, situated on a busy street, next to Waverley station, and is located within a Unesco World Heritage Site and the city's Old Town Conservation Area.

The design, overseen by JM Architects and interiors firm FG Stijl, is described as "neo-Brutalism meets Scots heritage", with "innovative reinterpretations of classic national motifs".

The Carlton Hotel Collection is part of Hotel Management International, which owns, operates and manages 10 hotels across Europe with one in the UK, the Carlton George in Glasgow. The Market Street hotel was developed in partnership with property development and investment business EDI Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Edinburgh Council.
