Deliveroo launches clean and recycle service for plastic takeaway containers

Deliveroo is to launch a clean and recycle service for plastic takeaway containers in Cambridge and Oxford, in a bid to promote recycling.

The scheme will be launched in partnership with cleaning company Oxwash in August and allow customers to request that their containers be picked up to be washed and reused. QR Codes will be used to arrange collections or point customers towards drop-off points in high-density residential locations.

Dan Warne, UK managing director at Deliveroo said: "Food delivery is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and at Deliveroo we're proud to be the innovator, giving customers amazing food, restaurants extra business and riders well-paid work. We're also proud to be able to extend our innovation to help reduce the usage of plastics and promote recycling to our customers."

Deliveroo has suggested the scheme could be rolled out to more cities in 2020. It follows the success of its opt-in button for plastic cutlery, which saw a 90% drop globally, and its packaging store offering restaurant a route to recyclable or biodegradable packaging.
