Pensinsula London to offer "spacious standard bedrooms"

Clement Kwok, chief executive of Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels (HSH), the parent company of Peninsula Hotels, said that standard rooms at the 190-bedroom hotel will start at 600 sq ft.

"Our usual philosophy is to offer spacious accommodation and the rooms we will have here will be big by London standards."

Kwok was in London to attend the topping out ceremony at the hotel which is being developed on the site of a demolished 1950s and 1960s office building, adjacent to the Lanesborough hotel. HSH is the leasehold owner of the property, while Grosvenor holds the freehold.

Like all existing 10 Peninsula hotels around the world, the London property will offer extensive public spaces including a western restaurant, Chinese restaurant, large lobby where afternoon tea will be served and a retail boutique serving coffee. It will also feature a gym, swimming pool and 26 residencies.

The architect of the project is UK-based Hopkins Architects, with the overall interiors overseen by US-based Peter Marino and the food and beverage outlets designed by Archer Humphryes and CAP Atelier.

Kwok said the exterior design will be sympathetic to the Georgian design of the surrounding area, without being a pastiche. "It will be classical with some contemporary touches, while the interior will have a gracious, timeless design, with British touches."

The general manager is yet to be appointed, but is most likely to come from within Peninsula Hotels around 18 month prior to the opening, confirmed Kwok. "Nationality will not be our number one consideration, we shall be looking at the strengths of our people and who is most suitable for the location."

Kwok revealed that Peninsula Hotels had been searching for 30 years to find the right site for a property in London. "We had originally been in the running to operate the hotel that became the Lanesborough, but that didn't happen, so we kept looking," he said.

"We recognised London as one of the best cities in the world and wanted to wait to find a location that was capable of providing the hotel with something that would give something that was comparable in stature to the Dorchester."
