Former Hotel du Vin boss Nick Halliday takes on role on Isles of Scilly

Nick Halliday, the former chief operating officer of Hotel du Vin, has swapped the mainland for island life after being appointed chief executive of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly.

In the newly created role, Halliday will aim to extend the season of the island, which in the summer months welcomes 800 guests, by developing wellness and adventure retreats during the shoulder periods.

After leaving Hotel du Vin, where he had spent four years, in May 2018, Halliday went on to launch consultancy business Stand Out Hospitality. After managing a number of London-based projects for a client, he moved to Tresco at Easter.

Halliday now runs a plethora of hospitality businesses on behalf of the Dorrien-Smith family who lease Tresco from the Duchy of Cornwall. They include the 16-bedroom New Inn, the Flying Boat bistro, Ruin Beach café, and the 24-bedroom Hell Bay hotel on the neighbouring island of Bryher. A permanent staff of 125 is swelled by 100 team members in the summer.

"Moving to Tresco has involved a major change in lifestyle and is one which I'm very much enjoying," said Halliday. "There is a huge potential to grow the business here, particularly with the introduction of a helicopter service next March to the island from Penzance."

Located 30 miles off the coast of Cornwall, Tresco is the second largest island of the Isles of Scilly, measuring 3.5km by 1.75km. The majority of guests arrive by air from Newquay, Exeter or Land's End to St Mary's, the largest island, and then a five-minute boat ride to Tresco.
