Wedgwood chef and potter
Chefs from Northern Ireland have taken two of the top three places in the Irish regional stage of the 1998 Chef and Potter Competition.
In the first of four regional stages of the contest, sponsored by Wedgwood, 36 chefs were selected to compete in a cook-off at the Kildare Hotel and Country Club, west of Dublin, on 6 April.
The judges included Académie Culinaire de France president Richard Sheppard and Nico Ladenis. Commenting at the Irish regional heat, Sheppard said that the standard of cooking was high, but he urged competing chefs, who present one original dish and arrange it in harmony with a selected Wedgwood plate design, "to keep it simple and not to over-complicate dishes".
Wedgwood, now organising the competition for the third year, invites chefs to take part in regional contests in the build-up to a final, which this year takes place at London's Royal Garden Hotel on 28 September.
